Vata -Don’t Worry!

The best advice for a vata person aside from the diet is to eat a regular 3 meals a day, consistently at the same time, routine is really good for vatas as is practicing some sort of grounding meditation and practicing yoga, early bedtime is also recommended.

Pitta people need to learn to calm and soothe their fiery temperament and aggression, this can best be achieved by meditation of the calm abiding sort, and avoiding heat, both in temperature and climate and in food.

In ayurveda it is said in order for a person to cure a Kapha person you need to be a mother to a vata, a friend to a pitta and an enemy to a kapha to motivate them to do anything about thier health! Ayurveda Diet Tips For Pitta Body Type

Do you getting to know somebody who seems to complain his/her body is always hot? It doesn’t matter if they’re overweight or if it’s freezing outside. Some people just tend to sweat and overheat easily. They’re usually the ones that can get away with only wearing a lightweight jacket in freezing temperatures. They’re also some of the most susceptible to heat exhaustion and take a long time to adjust to living in warm climates.

Or, have you ever met someone with a “fiery” disposition? Someone that tends to get angry quickly and doesn’t deal well with insubordination or disrespect? They seem to be unable to tolerate even the smallest disappointments without getting up in arms.

I acknowledge that several factors work influence these characteristics on an individual basis, but Ayurvedic medicine would say people with these traits are probably Pitta people (a basic summary of Ayurvedic body types can be found here). Pitta people were born with an abundance of this particular dosha, which is corresponds to the sun’s energy on Earth (the basics of doshas in Ayurveda is explained here). Because they have an abundance of Pitta, these people have a high internal heat that must be controlled through mental exercises, food, and calming behaviors.

Ayurveda focuses on maintaining an internal balance between the three primary doshas. It is important to know your prevailing dosha because that provides an Ayurvedic practitioner a possible cause of any ailments you may be having and gives them a starting point for treating this illness. If you and your Ayurvedic doctor know your dominant dosha, it will be easier for you both to create a diet and activity regimen focused on realigning that dosha in relation to the other two.

Pitta Diet Recommendations

In general, Pitta people need to eat cooling, moist foods and should avoid hot spices. Here’s a list of some foods that are good for Pittas and some they should avoid.

Best foods for Pitta people:

Dairy – (cooling) butter, cottage cheese, milk, and paneer.

Fruit – (sweet and astringent) apples, blueberries, coconut, cranberries, dates, figs, grapes, limes, mango, melons, sweet oranges/tangerines, pears, persimmons, pineapples, plums, pomegranate, prunes, and raspberries.

Vegetables – (sweet and bitter) alfalfa sprouts, artichokes, asparagus, bell peppers, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, cauliflower, celery, cilantro, corn, cucumber, eggplant, green beans, kale, lettuce, mushrooms, okra, parsley, peas, potatoes, squash, and zucchini. All legumes are good.

Grains – (cooling) barley, basmati rice, brown rice, couscous, millet, granola, oats, quinoa, white rice, and wheat.

Spices – (cooling) coriander, fennel, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, turmeric, and black pepper in moderation.

Oils – (cooling) coconut, olive, sunflower, and soy.

Meat – Ayurvedic medicine states that a vegetarian diet is best for all doshas. While meat is generally not recommended in Ayurveda, cooling meats such as chicken, turkey, egg whites, and rabbit are the best for Pitta people.

Nuts should generally be avoided except for coconut and sunflower seeds.

All naturally cooling sugars are good in moderation, except for honey.

Foods to avoid for Pitta:

In general, Pitta people should stay away from sour, astringent, or spicy (hot) foods. Meat has the tendency to provoke anger and aggressiveness, which should be avoided for Pitta people who already have those tendencies. Red meat and fish (including shellfish) is bad for Pitta. Pork is the worst.

Fruits – (sour and acidic fruit can be taken in small quantities) apricots, bananas, cherries, grapefruit, lemons, papaya, peaches, and strawberries.

Vegetables – (avoid acidic and spicy vegetables) beets, carrots, chard, chilies, onions, radishes, seaweeds, spinach, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, turnips, and yams. Chilies and tomatoes are the worst for Pitta.

Nuts – (nuts are naturally oily and warm) almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, hazelnuts, pecans, pine nuts, pumpkin seeds, sesame, and walnuts.

Oils – (avoid animal oils and other warming oils) margarine, mustard, peanut, safflower, and sesame.

Spices – (inappropriate spices are the most common causes of Pitta imbalances) basil, bay leaf, black pepper, cayenne, garlic, ginger, horseradish, oregano, mustard, nutmeg, paprika, rock salt, sage, sea salt, soy sauce, and tamarind.

Pitta people should also avoid pickles, vinegar, ketchup, carbonated drinks, coffee, and alcohol.

Diet Management for Pitta

Ayurveda recommends Pitta people should emphasize a cool, slightly dry diet. However, Pittas have the strongest digestion and can get away with excessive eating, bad food combinations, and eating inappropriate foods better than the other doshas can. Wrong diet in Pitta people can result in inflammation, hyperacidity, ulcers, rashes, toxic blood diseases, liver disorders, and hypertension. Pitta people should make sure to drink plenty of cool water and eat their meals at a regular time each day in a calm, grateful manner.

Right eating is an important aspect of Ayurvedic medicine. Ayurvedic professionals typically recommend a diet tailored to your individual dosha, which is why this form of alternative medicine has been successful for thousands of years. It recognizes we are all individuals with unique dispositions. Optimal health is achieved through preventative medicine in Ayurveda. Disease prevention in Ayurveda starts with the diet because the foods we eat are literally the building blocks of our bodies.

Many people would like to know how they can improve their digestion and how they can eliminate the uncomfortable of heartburn, gas, acid reflux, acne and other discomfort that they have.

Well, most of the times all of these discomfort are actually caused by improper food combining. When people first start to eat ayurvedic food, they may notice a little bit of bloating because they are not used to eating so many fruits and vegetables. One of the ways to make this experience to be the most pleasant for you is by practicing proper food combining rules.

Because I want to make eating ayurvedic food to be the best experience possible for you, I am going to share with you the guideline and recipes about the proper food combining.

Food Combining Theory

The theory was first discovered by a medical doctor in the early 1890s. The doctor identified and categorized the foods into different categories to prevent the conflict reaction between different foods. By follow the food chart, every one of us can consume the right foods in the most efficient way and live a healthy life always.

There are many different ayurveda foods combining chart that you can find on the internet. But here we are going to focus only on one that is specifically base around on ayurveda food.

Before getting into the complexities of food combining, first let us study the basic run down of a fully ayurveda food combining base on water content.

It is always good advices for you to eat the juicy thing first and not too juicy thing after. The reason for this is that juicy food like watermelons, cucumbers, and grapes are all tend to digest from your system extremely quickly with approximately just between 1 to 2 hours.

Green such as lettuce, romaine or vegetable like broccoli can take up to 3 hours to properly digest from your system. So I always recommend people to eat the juicy things first and less juicy things after to allow enough time for better digestion and elimination.

Easy Fruits Consumption

As we move to display the little ayurveda food circle, let’s start with the easy juicy fruit which is cantaloupe. This fruit is best for anyone to eat alone because they are absolute juicy fruit that you can have in this planet. They digest very quickly usually within the hour. So you can always eat them alone to let those entire yummy juicy digest very quickly in your system.

The next juicy fruit are typically acid fruits. Those fruits are including of orange, pineapple, grape, or tomato. They are yummy fruits but they sometimes didn’t combine well with other foods because they are acidic. As these fruits mixed very well with their food group, you can use them to make juicy smoothies for your consumption.

They also work really well with some other sub-acid fruits like apple or pear, which are fruits that not that sweet but still delicious to eat.

Sub-acid fruits can also mixed with fruits like nectarine or peach and even cucumber. All these fruits mixed perfectly well with green. If you want to eat them with a salad, it is recommended to eat them before you get your salad or mixed them in. But never eat any acid fruits after you eat a salad to avoid acidic fermentation in your stomach which will give you gas.

The next group is sub-acid fruits which is kind of neutral fruits because they are not too acidic and they are not too sweet as well. This group of fruits typically includes fruits like apple, pear, mango, kiwi, blueberry, and cherry. These fruits mixed very well with both acidic and sweet fruits. And they are definitely an amazing addition to any type of vegetable dish for salad. However, if you do want to eat them with green, you should always eat them first to allow them to have enough time to digest properly so that they are not sitting on top of your green and giving you a stomach ache.

When you eat sub-acid fruits and acid fruits before your salad or before any vegetable dish, it allows proper digestion and helps to eliminate any type of discomfort.

Sweet Fruits

The next group of fruit is sweet fruits and this is most people favorite group because many people tend to love sweet things.

Sweet fruits are including banana, dates or any type of tropical fruits. Sweet fruits are very low in water content and because they are so sweet, they usually high in calorie. These fruits are great for athletes who want more energy and need more fuel throughout the day. However, these fruits do not mixed well with acid fruits because when they mixed together, they are very different in water content and it is kind of like oil and vinegar. They can give you indigestion, gas, acid reflux. or they can create acidic fermentation in your stomach.

A bad example of ayurveda food combining would be something like banana with oranges because they are very different in water content. If you want to make a smoothie with these two fruits, you will see the banana float at the top and orange at the bottom. If you drink it, it is going to be the same in your stomach and this can create acidic fermentation and even bad breath for you.

For people who eat a lot of sweet fruits and they still want some juicy fruits before and after. You can always eat sub-acid fruits or drink a lot of water before you eat these fruits to keep hydrated.

For those who wish to improve your digestion and get it solid, try a mono meal. A mono meal is eating one fruit at a time for a full meal and you eat enough of that particular fruit to feel satisfied, to get enough calories and feel super energetic.

Vegetables

Vegetables like leafy green, broccoli, herbs, or avocados are mixed well with salad. They all have similar water content. Vegetables that are leafy green are typically mixed very well with other fruits as long as those fruits are eating before or the fruits are mix together to be eaten together with salad.

You also want to make sure that you didn’t combine acid fruits, sweet fruits and salad together. One reminder is that fruit shouldn’t be combined with nuts as well since it digests quicker than nuts which may cause your stomach to become very uncomfortable.

Watermelon is a Great Thirst Quencher in Ayurveda

Watermelon is a great thirst quencher. It is a most welcome fruit during the scorching Indian summer. Its botanical name is citrullus lanatus. It is called water – melon in English and ‘Tarbry’ in Hindi . It belongs to the family of Cucurbitaceae ( Cucumber) family.

Watermelon is native of Tropical Africa with probably a secondary centre of diversification in India. It is said that this fruit was found in the kalhari desert region of Africa by David Livingstone, the famous english explorer. It has been cultivated at least since Egyptian times.

It reached china is the 10th century probably from India. China is now the largest producer and exporter of water – melon. The fruit was introduced in Europe in the 13th century. In the English dictionary compiled in the year 1615, in America, the word watermelon found a place. The cultivation of watermelon started in full swing only after 1940.

Now Mediterranean countries export watermelons on a large scale and earn substantially.

Introduction of Watermelon to India

Watermelon was introduced to India in 4th century A.D. Sushruta has mentioned is his Sushruta Samhita about the cultivation of watermelon along the banks of the Indus river. He called this fruit as ” Kalinga”.

The plant is an annual climber, with more or less hairy leaves which are often deeply 3 – or 5 – lobed, with the lobes themselves often pinnately lobed. The yellow corolla of the flower is about 11/2 inches across. The fruit is usually ellipsoidal, often 10 inches across, with whitish, yellow or red flesh, sweet and juicy but rather insipid. It is picked only when fully ripe. In some regions, the seeds, which are variable in colour, are eaten. They are oily and nutritious.

Watermelon are cultivated all over India but mostly in Maharashtra. It is grown in Karnataka also and most of the fruits sold in Chennai during summer comes from Karnataka.

The earlier fruits were small and without seeds. But now large fruits, (developed due to research and genetics) are grown in maximum qualitity. There are sever altarities Bandra, Kala, Durbuj, etc.

• Watermelon can be eaten raw, directly. It could be made into juice which is very refreshing. You can add glucose, honey or lime juice. In cases of cholera, diarrhoea, dysenty, vomitting, nausea etc, the melon – juice acts as a dehydrating agent.

• Because of its cooling effects, mind and body become calm and cod.

• Melon is a good diuretic, because it contains potassium. It can be used for treating urinary stones scanty urination, metabolic acidosis etc. But it is not of much use in kidney failure with severe Uramia.

• Some Unani Hakeems treat mental disorders (insanity, hysteria, insomnia etc) with watermelon.

• A ripe fruit is cut into two halves and the pulp is scooped out, to make it hollow. It is then put as a cap on the shaved head of the patient for three hours and replaced with another one. The process is repeated three to four times a day for four days.

• Watermelon is a pleasant dessert fruit.

• The rind of the fruit is used in cooking by Chinese. The fruit can be made into pickles or preserved in syrup. In cardiovascular and renal disorders associated with sodium and water retention. But as said earlier, water melon does not help much in kidney failure.

• The seeds are quite nutritious. The seeds contain 20-40% edible oil & about 30% protein. They are cooling, soothing, diuretic, and vermituge. Hara Bhara Parantha

This is a great recipe where you can get a quarter of grind lamb and blend it together with boil mashed potatoes. Then put black pepper, rock salt, red chili, coriander leaves and green chilly. Knit the bread dough and squeeze the potion inside the parantha and make preparations with the use of desi Ghee.

Carrot tea:

Take carrot with well sliced and blended with herbs, boiled it and then filtered. This carrot tea is especially good for your eyes.

Almond milk:

Ingredients
– 10 almonds soaked overnight in enough water to cover
– A pinch of ground cardamom
– A pinch of pepper
– 1 teaspoon of honey
– 250ml of warm water, milk or soya milk

Procedure
Dip a mug of almonds through the night and peel off the skin the next day. Blend together one cup of soaked almonds with 2 cups of water. Strain off the almond milk through a muslin or sieve. You can drink as it is or add some warming spices such as cinnamon, ginger and cardamom. Another idea is to blend almond milk with some soaked dates. You can use the leftover strained almond pulp to make delicious energy balls.


Basmati rice

Cooked Basmati rice:

Procedure
1. Take slightly lower than 2 times the water volume to the rice and put it to boil.
2. Put in the rice together with a pinch of salt to taste.
3. Lower the heat, cover with a lid and let the rice cook for about 10 to 15 minutes.
4. Turn off the heat when all the water has been absorbed by the rice.
5. Let the rice remain there for about 5 minutes and then you can remove the lid.



Tahini Sauce

Ingredients
Stuffs need to prepare including:
– 1/2 cup of tahini (raw sesame seed paste)
– 1/2 teaspoon Himalayan Sea Salt
– 1 crushed garlic clove
– 1/4 cup lemon juice
– 2 tablespoons olive oil
– 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
– Pinch of paprika

Procedure
1. Using the mixer to blend the tahini, ginger, and garlic.
2. Add paprika and salt.
3. Take out from mixer.
4. Add lemon juice and also olive oil.
5. If the taste is too thick, you may add a teaspoon or a few teaspoons of warm water right until you get your preferred thickness.

Digestive Tea

Ingredients
– 1/3 teaspoon Whole Coriander seeds
– 1/3 teaspoon Whole Cumin seeds
– 1/3 teaspoon Whole Fennel seeds
– 1 cup Water

Procedure
1. Pour the water and boil it.
2. When water is boiled, add the spices.
3. Remove the heat from the pot and let it remain there for 5 minutes.
4. It’s good to go and you can add sweetener on it if you want thicker taste.

Lentil Curry (Dhal)

Ingredients
– 500 gram of red lentils
– 1O chopped onions
– 1 cardamom pods
– 1 piece of clove
– 1 teaspoon of chopped curry leaves
– 1/2 liter of thick coconut milk (1 part of water / 1 part of coconut milk)
– 1/2 liter of thin coconut milk (2 parts of water / 1 part of coconut milk)
– 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric
– 2 teaspoon of mustard cream
– 10 gram of chopped ginger
– 1/2 teaspoon of salt
– 2 chopped garlic

Procedure
1. Combine red lentils together with the thin coconut milk.
2. Add all other ingredients that listed above except the ginger and salt.
3. Cook with medium heat for about 15 – 20 minutes until the lentils are soft.
4. Add the thick coconut milk, the ginger and salt.
5. Ready to eat.


Split Mung Bean Khichadi

Split Mung Bean Khichadi

Khichadi does play an important role in ayurveda cooking. It is very nutritious and has the ability in balance off all dosha constitutions. Many people prepare Khichadi with the purpose for fasting since this dish is light, and very nourishing to cleanse our body. When our digest systems not functioning well, this ayurvedic recipe can be well suited for us especially during the shifting season from winter to spring.
Ingredients
– 1 cup of long grain rice
– 1 teaspoon of salt
– 1/2 cup of split, hulled mung dal
– 1/2 teaspoon of sugar
– 3 1/2 cups of hot water
– 1 cm of fresh ginger
– 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds
– 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric
– 2 tablespoon of ghee, clarified butter
– 1/4 teaspoon of asafetida (hing)
– Chili powder to taste
– 1 small piece cinnamon
– 4 cloves

Procedure
1. Wash mung dal and rice in concert until water flows clear.
2. Drain and put aside for approximately 10 minutes.
3. Use a saucepan to heat the ghee.
4. Cook the cumin seeds till great smelling.
5. Put on cinnamon and cloves, cook them until no more flavors and immediately add chili powder, asafetida, turmeric. Cook quickly.
6. Put on the mixture of mung dal and rice to the spice mixture and cook them for about 5 minutes right until rice turns into translucent.
7. Add the hot water, sugar, salt, and boil them.
8. Shut the lid and switch the heat to really low and let it simmering for approximately 20 minutes. Wait till the rice and split beans are completely cooked.
9. You will now get a very soft mixture. If the mixture is too dry or too hard, then you may add some hot water on the top.
10. Cover with a lid and let the mixture simmering for another 5 minutes.
11. Dish out hot sprinkled with fresh and nicely chopped coriander together with a tablespoon of ghee. It can be a nice hot vegetable soup for consuming.
12. If you want the dish to be more tasteful, you may add some chopped vegetables such as potatoes, zucchini, green beans, carrots, and so on. You can add these chopped vegetables into the spice mixture in advance of putting in the mung dal and rice mixture.



Bitter Gourd Vegetable (Karela)

Ingredients
– 2 cups of sliced and scraped bitter gourd.(Ideally with the thick of 2/8 – 3/8 inch)
– 1 teaspoon of oil
– 1 teaspoon of coriander powder
– ½ tsp turmeric powder
– ½ teaspoon of cumin seeds
– ¼ teaspoon of cumin seed powder
– 1 teaspoon of coriander/cilantro leaves
– ½ teaspoon of salt
– 1 teaspoon of grated ginger
– 2 tablespoon of sweet onions
– ¼ teaspoon of fresh lime juice

Procedure
1. Soak in 1/2 teaspoon of salt into 1/2 liter water for 2-4 hours to lower the bitterness.
2. You can find 2 different of bitter gourd in the market. Bitter gourd with more rough skin or having dark color are bitterer while the one with smoother skin or having light color are less bitter.
3. Use a frying pan and turn on medium heat to heat the oil.
4. Add cumin seeds and fry them until golden brown.
5. Add ginger to the pan and fry for a minute. Follow by adding onions, stir them until loose color.
6. Add turmeric and salt.
7. Add the pieces of bitter gourd into the frying pan. Fry at low medium heat for 20 to 30 minutes until getting soft.
8. Disperse lime juice and blend fully. Then add cilantro leaves and blend again.
9. You can now eat the dish together with chapatti, nan and bread as side dish with rice.


Cinnamon Maple Quinoa

Cinnamon Maple Quinoa

Ingredients
– Pinch of sea salt
– 1 1/4C Water
– 1/2 C of sweet potato puree
– 1 C Quinoa
– 1 tablespoon of ghee
– 1/3 C of almond
– 1 tablespoon of pure maple syrup
– 1/4 teaspoon of cardamom
– 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon

Procedure
1. Use a saucepan to boil the water.
2. Rinse and strain the quinoa.
3. Put the quinoa to boiling water and turn to small heat to simmer the quinoa.
4. Don’t cover the pan with lid and let it cook for 10 minutes.
5. Turn off the heat, cover with a lid and let it stand for 5 minutes.
6. Using another pot to put on maple syrup, ghee, spices, sweet potato puree, salt, and milk.
7. Cook the pot with low heat.
8. Once the mix ingredients getting warm you can add quinoa into it.

You can now enjoy a bowl of nourishing dish with your favorite toppings!


Buckwheat

Buckwheat with Brown Rice

Ingredients
– 1/2 cup of brown rice
– 1/2 cup of buckwheat
– 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric
– 1/4 teaspoon of mineral salt
– 1 to 2 tablespoon of ghee
– 1/8 teaspoon of black pepper(or 1/4 teaspoon of fresh grated ginger)
– 1/4 cup of chopped cashews
– 4 cups of water

Procedure:
1. Mix all ingredients into a pot except ghee and cashews.
2. Boil the water and simmer for about 45 minutes,
3. Cook the rice for about 18 minutes with pressure cooker.
4. Once this is done, stir and leave it to stand for about 3 to 5 minutes.
5. Use a separate saucepan and turn a low heat to heat the ghee. Then add cashews to heat as well.
6. Stir the ghee till fragrance springs up.
7. Pour ghee and cashews over grain and stir further.
