Who doesn’t like the sweet smell? The nose is the carrier of smell to the brain.
The human mind has the power to differentiate between acceptable and unacceptable smells.
The acceptable smell is known as fragrance, which can either be natural or artificial. The atmosphere with fragrance is liked by everyone.
The fragrance creates great ambient. Natural fragrance is nothing but the smell of flowers, scented wood like sandalwood, rosewood, cedarwood, and so on, herbs & grasses like rosemary, sage, lemongrass, and so on.
Even some parts of few herbs or plants like barks of cinnamon, and cardamom have a good smell and spread fragrance in the place they are in. We can stay at places that are without any kind of smell; however, it is not possible for us to stay in places that smell bad. Fragrance dominated by flowers is called floral fragrance.
Natural fragrance is either present naturally or is induced. The natural fragrance is spread in the atmosphere by growing flowering plants in your garden.
Perfumes made from the mixture of alcohol and water along with synthetic fragrant aromatic oils fall under the category of artificial fragrance, while the mixture mixed with natural aromatics fall under the induced natural fragrance.
Soaps, shampoos, perfumes, detergents, fabric softeners, household cleaning agents, and so on are with artificial fragrance; however, the combination of chemicals and solvents are done in such a way that you get the natural fragrance.
Nature is the reservoir for natural fragrance. You get the fragrance from materials with the origin of vegetable. The main part of the plant with fragrance is the blossom. The other parts like leaves, roots, and stem also have fragrance.
The leaves of eucalyptus, tuberose of rose & jasmine, peel of orange and lemon, angelica roots, and so on are few examples of natural fragrance. Natural fragrance does not have any harmful or side-effects whereas the induced or artificial fragrance might cause side-effects, if not harmful in the long run.
Smell Good With Perfume Compounds
To feel good and smell good, you can use perfume after grooming yourself properly. Perfumes and body sprays have become a part of today’s youth’s attire.
Perfume compounds go hand in hand with the party wear. In the Persian language, perfumes are known as Attars.
Arabs and Persians popularized attars largely, apart from herbal, fragrant materials and spices.
They perfected in preparing attars through steam distillation, and also prepared new perfumes by introducing new ingredients, and removing a few of them. Different types of attars are available in the market.
They are Attar Champa, Attar Gulab, Attar Kewra, Attar Mitti, Attar Motia, Attar Shamama, and so on. In all these perfume compounds, sandalwood is distilled along with natural fragrant materials like champaca, rose, pandanus, baked Kannauj earth, jasmine sambac, saffron, agarwood, and so on. Plants are the main source in the preparation of perfume compounds.
Essential oils, fixatives, aroma compounds, and solvents are mixed together to form a perfume. Depending upon the aroma compounds we use, we get such flavor.
To consider perfume as a perfume extract, you need to consider the amount and type of solvent mixed with the fragrance oil.
The solvent for the aromatics is a mixture of alcohol and water. When you apply the perfume on your body, the solvent vanishes fast due to heat, while the fragrance on your body fills the atmosphere.
Based on the quickness with which the scent emerges when the perfume is applied, the perfumes are classified into notes.
The scent, that appears immediately after the perfume is applied, it is the top note. The scent that appears after the dissipation of top note is known as heart or middle note. The base note is the scent that appears after the top note disappears completely.
Both base & heart notes form the perfume’s theme. We use perfumes, not only on our clothes but also on objects and living space, so that the atmosphere is fragrant and pleasant. For longer life of fragrance compounds in the perfume, make sure that you don’t expose it to heat, light, oxygen, or any other organic material.
Natural Spice Oils and Essential Oils
After strenuous physical work, it would be like heaven if someone gives us a good body and hair massage with oil.
Good oil massage would help us regain our strength and high spirits.
It also rejuvenates new life in our body cells and helps them repair or replace the worn or old cells, due to which the skin becomes fresh and tight.
This is possible by natural spice oils and essential oils. For the comfort and relaxation of the body, these oils are used. Sometimes, different natural spice oils and essential oils are mixed for more effectiveness in the massage.
These oils are extracted from the plants. Flowers, twigs, leaves, bark, stem, root and so on are the main sources for natural spice oils and essential oils.
Few important natural spice oils & essential oils are ajowan oil, aniseed oil, basil oil, black pepper oil, cardamom oil, chilly seed oil, cinnamon oil, cumin seed oil, curry leaf oil, jasmine oil, clove bud oil, ginger grass oil, eucalyptus oil, cucumber oil, and so on.
Distillation is the main process in the extraction of these natural spice oils & essential oils from different parts of the plants.
Steam distillation, hydrodistillation, and cold-pressed distillation are the main processes followed to extract these oils from seed, herb, leaf, flower or herb, leaf or cone, bark, clove, resin, gum resin, bud, grass, root, and sometimes, even the whole plant.
Ajowan oil is extracted from the seed by steam distillation.
The leaf of aloe vera is processed by cold-pressed distillation to form the Aloe vera Gel. The fruit of pepper is steam distilled to form pepper oil.
The flower & the herb are steam distilled to extract blue chamomile oil. Turpentine oil, the natural essential oil is used for massages and also as a thinner in the paints. Ginger oil is formed by steam distillation of the ginger root. There are many such oils extracted in similar methods.
Life without natural flavor is no more natural. The flavor is of two types: natural and artificial. Human beings are animals with five senses.
They are sight, smell, taste, hearing, and touch. Human beings are believed to see with the mind in some way. This ability is known as the sixth sense. The flavor is generally perceived by both nose and tongue in the form of smell and taste.
Food can be naturally or artificially flavored. Food’s flavor is initially determined by the smell, as the smell comes before taste.
Flavor perceived through the nose is abstract, and limitless, while the flavor perceived through the tongue can be described as sweet, salty, sour, spicy, hot and so on.
Smell flavor can be altered without altering the taste or the flavor of taste.
Right from our childhood, we are taught that natural substances and foods are highly good for health. This belief is induced to use both at school and at home. This belief makes us check for either the natural flavors labels or no artificial flavors ones on all the readily available food substances that we purchase from outside.
The natural flavoring does not have or have very less nutritional value in the food substances we eat, and need not be healthier than the artificial ones. Not many of us know what natural flavor is.
Essential oils, oleoresin, protein hydrolysate, distillate are natural flavors.
Even any product of heating, roasting, or enzymolysis containing flavor agents that are taken from spices, fruits or fruit juices, dairy products, leaf or similar plant material like pulp of the stem, bud, root, or fermentation products that can add flavor to your food than nutrition falls under the category of natural flavors.
We should understand that sometimes, even natural foods are poisonous in nature. For example, when you extract benzaldehyde from apricot pits and peach, it contains the deadly poison, hydrogen cyanide.
However, when the same benzaldehyde is prepared from clove and amyl acetate mixing, there is no cyanide trace in it. There is no big difference between artificial or natural flavor. Few manufacturing units manufacture both flavors together.
